Babe Ruth



Ruth, Babe (George Herman Ruth; 1895–1948), U.S. baseball player. Known as the first great power hitter in the major leagues, he is second on the all time home run list (714). Originally an outstanding pitcher (won 94 games, lost 46 for his career), Ruth was switched to the outfield and became a prolific hitter (.342 career average). Ruth's achievements include hitting 60 home runs in one season (1927), winning the American League Most Valuable Player award (1923), and leading the majors in home runs 11 times (1918–21, 23–24, 26–29, 31). He played for the Boston Red Sox (1914–20), New York Yankees (1920–34) and Boston Braves (1935). Known as The Bambino, he led the Yankees to 4 World Series championships (1923, 27, 28, 32) and was among the first group of players inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame (1936).
