S, 19th letter in the alphabet, corresponding to the Semitic letter sin, meaning tooth, represented by a rounded W shape derived from an ancient Egyptian symbol for tusk. Phoenicians squared off the curves; Greeks turned the resulting sign on its side (as sigma); and, as the 18th letter of the Roman alphabet, S assumed its present form. S is used as an abbreviation for such words as south and sulfur.
