Sabah



Sabah, formerly North Borneo, state in the Federation of Malaysia, on the northern tip of the island of Borneo, Malay archipelago. It lies on the South China and Sulu seas, with Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) to the southwest and Brunei to the west. Sabah and Sarawak (also on the island of Borneo) became British protectorates in 1882 and then crown colonies in 1946. In 1963 they joined the newly formed Federation of Malaysia. Sabah's capital is Kota Kinabalu. It has a tropical climate and is largely mountainous (highest peak, Mt. Kinabalu, 13,432 ft/4,094 m). Main exports are timber, rubber, and copra (dried coconut).
