Hans Sachs



Sachs, Hans (1494–1576), most popular German poet and dramatist of his time, one of the Meistersingers, and by trade a shoemaker. His prolific output included “The Nightingale of Wittenberg” (1523), which honors Martin Luther. Sachs was the model for a leading character by the same name in Richard Wagner's Die Meistersinger (1868).
