Salamander

Salamander, tailed amphibian (order Vrodela) related to frogs and toads. Salamanders' weak limbs, which are not used for locomotion to any great extent, are small and can regenerate. These mostly nocturnal creatures range in size from under 6 in (15 cm) to 5 ft (1.5 m) and are abundant in damp areas of the northern temperate zone. Some species are aquatic, most are terrestrial, and a few are arboreal. Salamanders feed on insects and other invertebrates.
