Carlos Salinas de Gortari



Salinas de Gortari, Carlos (1948– ), president of Mexico (1988–94). As secretary of planning and the budget in the cabinet of President Miguel de la Madrid Hurtado, Salinas managed Mexico's economy from 1982 to 1987. He was elected on the ticket of the ruling party, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), to succeed Madrid. In 1995 he left for the United States. He was suspected of being involved in political murders. In 1996, thousands of Mexican farmers blamed him for the 1994 financial crisis and wanted him imprisoned.
