Susanna Madora Salter
Salter, Susanna Madora (1860–1961), first woman to be elected mayor of a U.S. town (Argonia, Kans.; 1887). Opponents of Prohibition had nominated Salter, a Woman's Christian Temperance Union officer, as a joke.
