Deborah Sampson



Sampson, Deborah (1760–1827), schoolteacher from Plympton, Mass., who disguised herself as a man to fight in the Revolutionary War. Wounded twice before her identity was discovered, she was given an honorable discharge by Gen. George Washington. The U.S. Congress granted her a military pension in 1805.
