George Sand

Sand, George (Amandine Aurore Lucie Dupin; 1804–76), French novelist. Her novels, at first romantic, later socially oriented, include Indiana (1832) and The Haunted Pool (1846). Her life-style—coupled with her ardent feminism—caused much controvery. Her lovers included Frédéric Chopin and Alfred de Musset. Her memoirs, The Story of My Life (1854–55), provide a graceful justification of her views.
