Sand painting
Sand painting, highly developed art form among the Navajo and Pueblo peoples of the southwestern United States, used in connection with rites of healing. Painting designs are made from crushed, colored sandstone. When the painting is completed, the person needing healing sits on it and has sand from it applied to his or her body. When the ritual is completed, the painting is destroyed.
