Sanhedrin

Sanhedrin, supreme Jewish legislative and judicial court in Roman times. Some scholars hold that there were two Sanhedrin, one religious and one political. Jesus was tried by the religious Sanhedrin while Saints Peter, John, Stephen, and Paul appeared before it on charges of religious error. It ceased to exist in Jerusalem after the Romans put down a rebellion by the Jews in A.D. 66–70.
