San José



San José (pop. 296,600), capital and largest city of the Central American nation of Costa Rica. It is a center for government, industry, and finance, and is the location of the nation's largest agricultural market. San José is situated at the center of the country in a valley. It was founded by Spanish settlers in the mid-18th century.
