San Marino
San Marino, one of the world's smallest republics and possibly the oldest state in Europe, southwest of Rimini, Italy. Built on 3 peaks of Mount Titano, its townships include San Marino (the capital) and Serravalle. Tradition reports that San Marino was founded as a refuge for persecuted Christians in the 4th century. A.D. The area is 24 sq mi (61 sq km). San Marino's chief sources of income are tourism and the sale of postage stamps. The republic is governed by 2 captains-regent assisted by a 60-member council of state. In 1992 San Marino joined the UN. It has access to the EU by means of a customs union with Italy.
