San Salvador
San Salvador (pop. 497,600), capital and largest city of El Salvador, about 25 mi (40 km) from the Pacific Ocean. Because it is situated in a volcanic region, it has suffered many earthquakes. The city was founded in 1525 by Spanish explorer, Pedro de Alvarado. It is now a trade center, producing textiles, tobacco and soap.
