Antonio López de Santa Anna



Santa Anna, Antonio López de (1794–1876), Mexican general and dictator who tried to suppress the Texan revolution and fought U.S. troops in the Mexican War. He helped establish Mexican independence (1821–29) and became president (1833). When the Texan settlers revolted against his tyranny (1836), he defeated them at the Alamo but lost the battle of San Jacinto (1836), was captured, and had to resign. He gained and lost the presidency 3 further times (1841–44, 1846–47, 1853–55). He spent most of his final years in exile.
