Santiago

Santiago (pop. 4,600,000), capital and principal industrial, commercial, and cultural city of Chile, on the Mapocho River. Industries include textiles, foodstuffs, and iron and steel foundries. It was founded in 1541 by Pedro de Valdivia. Numerous earthquakes destroyed most of the colonial buildings, and Santiago is now a modern city with parks and wide avenues.
