Santiago



Santiago (pop. 278,600), second-largest city in the Dominican Republic, lying on the Yanque del Norte River. Santiago is a distribution center for cacao, coffee, fruits, sugar cane, and tobacco, and manufactures cigars, cigarettes, dolls, and clothing. It was founded c. 1500 by Bartholomew Columbus, a brother of Christopher Columbus.
