University of Santo Domingo



Santo Domingo, University of, oldest university in the Western Hemisphere, located in the Dominican Republic. It was established by Pope Paul III in 1538 as the Univ. of St. Thomas Aquinas. A lay institution since 1815, the university offers courses in agronomy, architecture, business, engineering, law, medicine, philosophy, and veterinary medicine. It has an enrollment of about 50,000 students.
