Sappho
Sappho (6th century B.C.), Greek poet born in Lesbos. Surviving fragments of her work, mainly addressed to young girls, are among the finest classical love lyrics. The terms sapphism and lesbianism, meaning female homosexuality, derive from Sappho and Lesbos.
