Sargon of Akkad
Sargon of Akkad, king who founded the first great empire in history c. 2300 B.C. An outstanding military leader and administrator, he was the first king to maintain a permanent army. Sargon built a magnificent capital city called Akkad in central Mesopotamia. He reigned for 56 years.
