Sassafras

Sassafras, tree (Sassafras albidum) of the laurel family, found in the eastern half of North America. In the northern states it is usually little more than a shrub, but it grows to 100 ft (30.5 m) in the south. Oil of sassafras, used to flavor foods and perfume soap, is extracted from its bark and roots. Sassafras tea is also made from the roots.
