Saul



Saul, first king of Israel (1000 B.C.). The son of Kish of the tribe of Benjamin, he was annotated by Samuel after the tribes decided to unite under a king. His reign was generally successful, but he killed himself after a defeat by the Philistines. His rival, David, succeeded him. (1 Sam,10–31.)
