Scotland Yard, headquarters of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the London Metropolitan Police since 1829. Its jurisdiction covers 786 sq mi (2,036 sq km) containing more than 8 million people. It also coordinates police work throughout Britain and provides national and international criminal records.
