Shawnee Prophet

Shawnee Prophet (1775?–1837), Shawnee religious leader who (c. 1805) had visions that led him to take the name Tenskwatawa, meaning “the open door.” He began to preach to Native Americans, urging them to quit alcohol and to rededicate themselves to their own traditions. Members of many tribes rallied behind him and his brother, the chief Tecumseh. Tenskwatawa and his followers were defeated in the Battle of Tippecanoe (1811).
