Sheriff



Sheriff, executive officer of a county, a post that has existed in England since before 1066. Today the duties of a sheriff entail the execution of writs, the preparation of jurors, and the custody of prisoners. In the United States a sheriff functions as a peace officer in areas of a county not protected by city police. The office of sheriff is also found in Canada, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
