Sherman Silver Purchase Act



Sherman Silver Purchase Act (1890), compromise measure aiming to placate mine-owners and the advocates of free silver, which required the U.S. government to double its monthly silver purchases. It threatened to undermine gold reserves and was repealed when the panic of 1893 began.
