Battle of Slliloll

Slliloll, Battle of, major conflict of the U.S. Civil War, fought at Pittsburgh Landing, Tenn. (Apr. 6–7, 1862). The Union army under Gen. Ulysses S. Grant was forced back by a surprise onslaught of the 40,000-strong Confederate army under Gen. Albert S. Johnston. The reinforced Union army routed the Confederates in a counterattack the next day. On each side casualties were over 10,000.
