Siegfried Line

Siegfried Line, defensive line of fortifications built on Germany's western frontier. The first Siegfried Line was constructed in the winter of 1916–17 and ran through northern France and Belgium. The Allies called it the Hindenburg Line and finally breached it at the end of World War I. The second line, built in the 1930s along the German-French border, was smashed by the Allies in World War II.
