Silone, Ignazio (Secondo Tranquilli; 1900–78), Italian writer and social reformer. Opposed to fascism, he spent 1931–44 in exile in Switzerland. His novels include Fontamara (1933), Bread and Wine (1937), and A Handful of Blackberries (1952).
