Isaac Merrit Singer
Singer, Isaac Merrit (1811–75), U.S. inventor of the first viable domestic sewing machine (patented 1851). Although he lost a legal battle with the earlier inventor, Elias Howe, the Singer sewing machine soon became the most popular in the world.
