Smallpox



Smallpox, acute, highly contagious viral disease, initiated by sudden severe constitutional symptoms and characterized by a progressive skin eruption that often results in permanent pits and scars. The disease is of historical interest only, for the World Health Organization declared the world free of smallpox in 1980.
