Smut

Smut, fungi named for the masses of sooty spores formed on the surface of the host plant. Within the plant the smut develops a network of threads that take nutrients from it and cause stunting. Smuts attack wheat, corn, and other cereals, onions, sunflowers, and a few other plants. Smuts are hard to control because their spores can survive in the ground over the winter.
