Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), organizations promoting humane treatment of animals. These various societies aim to educate the public, introduce legislation, and assure the enforcement of laws that protect animals. Many societies maintain animal shelters and provide adoption and neutering services. There are about 1,000 local anti-cruelty societies in the United States today.
