Edward Seymour Somerset t duke of (1s)



Somerset, Edward Seymour, 1st duke of (1500–52), protector of England (1547–49) on the death of Henry VIII and accession of Edward VI. He used his great power to repeal heresy and treason laws and with Thomas Cranmer introduced the first Book of Common Prayer for the Church of England. Falsely accused of treason by his rivals, he was executed.
