South Australia, state in south-central Australia, with an area of 380,070 sq mi (984,381 sq km). Wheat, barley, wool, and wine are produced in the fertile southeast. Minerals include iron ore, opals, salt, gypsum, and coal. Major industries, centered in Adelaide, the capital and chief port, include smelting, chemicals, fertilizers, engineering, and automobiles.
