Spearfishing

Spearfishing, sport in which fish are caught underwater with the use of spears. An underwater slingshot device called a Hawaiian sling, a simple spear with a metal tip called a pole spear, and various kinds of spearguns are used to catch the fish. People spear fish from the surface or dive underwater, using breathing equipment, such as snorkels or scuba gear. In official meets, divers must breathe on their own underwater. After a fish is caught, the diver must gain control of it, with the help of a line that connects the spear to the spearing apparatus.
