Spirit of ' (76)



Spirit of '76, popular image of the American Revolution, depicted in a painting by Archibald M. Willard. Willard, a U.S. artist, created this image originally as a cartoon (c.1875). Later it was painted and displayed in the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition (1876). The image of a fife player and 2 drummers leading troops of the American army was modeled by acquaintances and relatives of the artist.
