Statute of limitations
Statute of limitations, law that prevents suits from being filed after a certain period has elapsed. Time limits differ according to the type of claim. Statutes of limitations vary from state to state. The U.S. federal government has its own set of statutes. Crimes such as murder are not affected by these laws.
