Harlan Fiske Stone
Stone, Harlan Fiske (1872–1946), U.S. jurist. Appointed attorney general (1924) to restore confidence in the scandal-ridden Justice Department, he became associate justice (1925–41) and chief justice (1941–46) of the U.S. Supreme Court. He was noted for his dissenting opinions, many supporting New Deal legislation.
