Suharto

Suharto (1921– ), Indonesian statesman, president 1968–98. A general, he defeated an attempted Communist coup in 1965, in the process overthrowing the government of Sukarno and killing as many as 500,000 people. Popular unrest and an economic crisis forced him to resign in 1998.
