Sun dance

Sun dance, religious ceremony observed by a number of Plains tribes of Native Americans during the summer. It involves eight days of fasting, self-torture (as penance), and the seeking of visions. Common during the 19th century, the ceremonies were discouraged by the U.S. government and have almost died out.
