Surabaya



Surabaya, or Surakaja (pop. 2,473,300), city in Indonesia, located on the northeastern coast of Java at the mouth of the Mas River. Surabaya's port is the second busiest in Indonesia (Jakarta has the busiest). It exports Indonesian products, including sugar, coffee, tobacco, spices, oils, and petroleum. The port is also home to Indonesia's main naval base. Surabaya is a busy industrial center. Its industries include shipbuilding and repair, textiles, chemicals, rubber, and cigarettes. Surabaya's educational facilities include a large university and a naval college.
