Susa

Susa (also called Shush), capital of the ancient Middle East country of Elam and later of the Persian Empire. Its ruins are located in southwestern Iran, just north of the Persian Gulf. Susa was an active community as early as biblical times. Archeological digs in the region have unearthed remains of many civilizations. Elam reached the peak of its power after 1300 B.C., after overthrowing Babylonia.
