Dame Joan Sutherland

Sutherland, Dame Joan (1926– ), Australian soprano, one of the foremost exponents of the art of bel canto. She made her debut in Sydney (1950), her U.S. debut in Dallas (1960), and her N.Y. Metropolitan debut (1961) in Lucia di Lammermoor. In 1990 she retired.
