Sweet gum

Sweet gum, any of various tall shade trees (genus Liquidambar) of the hazel family named for the sweet-smelling gummy substance they produce, called storax. Sweet gums have star-shaped leaves that turn brilliant colors in the fall. Storax is used for perfumes, adhesives, and ointments. Brown, spiny seed balls are produced as fruit and remain on the tree most of the winter.
