John Leonard Swigert Jr.
Swigert, John Leonard, Jr. (1931–82), U.S. astronaut who participated in the 1970 Apollo 13 moon mission, which was aborted in space after life-support systems failed. The astronauts returned to earth safely by relying on the lunar module's life systems. Swigert left the space program in 1977 and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
