Swiss Guard



Swiss Guard, member of the Swiss mercenary soldiers who served in various European armies from the 15th to the 19th centuries, most notably as bodyguards to the French monarch (1497–1792 and 1814–30). The colorfully uniformed Papal Swiss Guard at the Vatican Palace in Rome dates back to the late 1400s. It is the only surviving branch of the Guard.
