Robert Alphonso Taft



Taft, Robert Alphonso (1889–1953), U.S. senator from Ohio (1938–53). Eldest son of President William H. Taft, he studied law, served in the Ohio legislature, and became a leading conservative Republican. Taft was a fiscal conservative, an opponent of the New Deal, and an isolationist. His most famous congressional achievement was the Taft-Hartley Act.
