Tartan

Tartan, checkered fabric of Scotland's native dress. Each clan is ascribed a particular tartan, though often in more than one variety: the hunting tartans are usually somber blues and greens, while reds generally predominate the dress tartans. The authenticity of ascriptions to clans is questioned, and some tartans are of comparatively recent origin.
