or Tatars Tartars

Tartars, or Tatars, people of Turkish descent who live in the Russian Federation, Bulgaria, Romania, China, and Turkey. Originally a nomadic people, they turned to agriculture in the 16th century and have since figured prominently in the history of the Russian people. Many Tarters now live in the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic; most are Sunni Muslims.
